Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in Facial Rejuvenation

Overview

As living standards continue to improve, people are increasingly concerned about age-related facial changes. Skin aging is a common and complex biological process characterized by wrinkles, epidermal and dermal atrophy, rough texture, pigmentation, telangiectasia, and skin laxity. It is primarily caused by intrinsic aging driven by genetic and internal factors, as well as photoaging from external environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) has achieved excellent results in combating skin aging and improving wrinkles, skin laxity, enlarged pores, dull complexion, depressed scars from trauma or acne, pigmentation, age spots, dark circles, and allergic skin conditions.

Indications for PRP Facial Rejuvenation

  1. Wrinkle Reduction: Intradermal injection of PRP can improve skin texture and reduce wrinkles in the periorbital, forehead, perioral cheek, and neck regions, including forehead lines, temple lines, frown lines, crow's feet, periocular fine lines, nasal dorsum lines, nasolabial folds, perioral wrinkles, and neck wrinkles.
  2. Pigmentation and Spot Reduction: Intradermal PRP injection and its derivatives can effectively improve pigmentary lesions, including erythema, sunspots, age spots, and melasma.
  3. Facial Volume Restoration: PRP injection provides a degree of volume filling. Combined with fat grafting, it can be even more effective in addressing facial aging concerns such as acne marks, pitted scars, and depressed scars from trauma.
  4. Pore refinement, dark circle reduction, and vitiligo improvement.

Suitable Candidates

  1. Anti-wrinkle and anti-aging: PRP is rich in multiple growth factors. When injected into the dermal layer, it stimulates the production of collagen, elastic fibers, and matrix, achieving wrinkle reduction.
  2. Tissue deficit correction: After injection, growth factors promote tissue regeneration, offering particular benefits for depressed scars and tissue loss, and can be used for lip augmentation.
  3. Rapid skin quality improvement: Active factors accelerate and promote dermal microcirculation, thereby boosting metabolism and comprehensively improving skin texture and tone.
  4. Aging delay: PRP promotes growth and reorganization of multiple skin tissue layers, increases skin elasticity, achieves a facial lifting effect, and delays aging.
  5. Pigmentation and spot removal: Improved facial microcirculation and accelerated skin metabolism help the skin eliminate toxins, effectively improving pigmentation, sunspots, erythema, and melasma.
  6. Sensitive skin management: With continued use, PRP can modulate the skin's stress response system, resulting in healthier, more vibrant skin and improvement of allergic skin conditions.
  7. Large-area plastic surgery: PRP gel can be applied in extensive surgical procedures such as face and neck lifts and breast reduction to reduce postoperative pain, bleeding, hematoma, swelling, and other complications while promoting wound healing.
  8. Fat grafting: Mixing PRP with centrifuge-purified autologous fat particles for injection can improve fat graft survival rates.
  9. Post-laser recovery: PRP accelerates re-epithelialization following laser treatments.

PRP Application Methods in Facial Rejuvenation

A clinical study applying PRP to the forehead, zygomatic region, and mandibular skin found that after direct PRP injection combined with microneedling, followed by PRP-soaked gauze applied to the face for 30 minutes — performed once every 2 weeks for a total of 3 sessions — patients reported overall improvements in appearance, skin firmness, sagging, and wrinkles. No significant differences were observed in pigmentation. The most notable improvements identified by clinicians were enhanced skin firmness and reduced sagging.

Pre- and Post-Treatment Considerations

Before Treatment

Treatment is not recommended in the following conditions: low platelet count, sepsis, hematological disorders, acute or chronic infectious diseases, infection at the treatment site, and immune system disorders.

After Treatment

  1. Keep the treated area dry for 24 hours after treatment
  2. Avoid spicy and irritating foods, alcohol, and saunas for 1 week after treatment
  3. Do not take aspirin-class medications for 1 week after treatment
  4. Avoid massage for 1 week after treatment
  5. Refrain from laser treatments for 1 month after treatment
  6. Maintain moisturizing and sun protection at the treatment site
